Genealogical Projects

Planned, new, or Continuing List
Maintained by the IIGS™ Projects Registry Team

The Projects Register describes genealogical projects being carried out around the world. These are projects that may still be in the planning stage, while most of them are in progress. Some others, apparently completed, require continuous input of new information to complete their final objective. To be added to the Projects Register a project must be one that will provide free access to the data, searchable via the Internet. It must also be of interest to a significant part of the genealogical community. Therefore surname lists and family histories, while important, are limited and not included.

The Projects Register has several purposes. One of these is to serve as a means of letting the genealogical community know what is being done to make more data freely available via the Internet. The other is to make the genealogical community aware of the needs of these projects, particularly acting as a way to connect those projects which would can use hands-on help with those volunteers who would like to offer their services. The Projects Register describes each project, where to go for more information, how to make contact, what is needed by the project, and what what skills, if any, are required.

We would like to remind you that it is the responsibility of the project applicant or project manager to ensure that copyright and trademark requirements are met. IIGS™ urges all applicants and managers to understand these requirements and see that they are met.

If you would like to register your project, please go to Application for Project Registration. If more information on your project is required, we will contact you.

If you have an idea for a project that will provide free access and be searchable via the Internet, then IIGS™ may be able to help you. See our main page to see what the society does and please join us.

Let us know how you are getting along on your project.

Project NameAncestor Gravesite Project

ContactSandy L. Landrum-Kelly sandykelly@fastlanta.com
SubmitterSandy L. Landrum-Kelly sandykelly@fastlanta.com
Project DescriptionThis site contains a large database of gravesite photos that are submitted by researchers worldwide. Visitors are able to search for a gravesite by surname, state, country, or region. Our goal is to possibly help researchers find a long-lost ancestor's gravesite with the help of others researchers who submit their photos. With an overwhelming number of photos submitted, the web site is currently being redesigned to accommodate the large volume of photos and information. However, visitors will still be able to access the database while the changes are being made. This is an on-going project
Volunteer skillsWhen submitting photos, please include the surname of the person, the name of the cemetery, city/town, state, country or region of the world, as well as the gravestone inscription. Photos should be under 1 meg in size, with format of .jpg, .bmp,. tif, or .gif.

Project DescriptionAmherst College is the third oldest college in Massachusetts, after Harvard and Williams, and was founded in 1821. Notable alumni include President Calvin Coolidge; Chief Justice Harlan Fiske Stone; Charles Merrill (of Merrill, Lynch, & Co.); Clarence Birdseye (the frozen food guy); plus a huge number of academics and clergy. The Amherst College Biographical Record, Centennial Edition, published in 1927, contains information about 9,780 students of the College in the classes of 1822 to 1925. Each biography contains, if known: date and place of birth; parentage; date and place of death; date and place of marriages, and to whom; schooling information; occupation information; notable achievements; etc. The students have 3,316 different surnames. All student names have been entered and are online; an index is online -- basically, a complete skeleton of the work is online. All that remains is transcription of 9,000+ biographies!
Volunteer skillsReasonably accurate typing skills. I will mail you photocopies of pages of the book (you can view a sample page at http://www.amherst.edu/~rjyanco/genealogy/acbiorecord/samplepage.html). Simply transcribe one or two biographies per day and email them to me -- I will take care of all indexing and HTML issues

Project NameFilmed Image Conversion and Access
URL for more informationNot available as yet

SubmitterJohn Porter jporter@roadrunner.com
Project DescriptionProject by the Family History Technology Lab (FHiTL) is designed to make microfilmed images available on the web. Because of the scanned size of the images, an aid in selecting the right image is needed. A tool has been written for simple data entry to provide basic information to allow a search for and access to the filmed record. The description of the image by volunteers will be entered into the database. The end goal is for users to be able to connect the FHiTL site, run a search and be shown a clip of the actual microfilm image. The searcher can download the entire image if desired.
Volunteer skillsBeta tests of the data entry and search tool will be conducted by individuals who have volunteered to participate. Their equipment must have a minimum of 64 MB of RAM as well as the use of Java.
